Maryland ranks as one of the states with the worst fiscal strength

Maryland is in poor fiscal shape, according to a new study released by George Mason University’s Mercatus Center.

The group ranked Maryland as having the fifth worst fiscal condition based on data collected from each state’s most recent audited comprehensive annual financial report. This year’s study, the center’s fourth, looked at reports from fiscal year 2015.

Maryland ranked inside the study’s “bottom five” group, which also included Kentucky, Massachusetts, Illinois and New Jersey.
